The former world champion delivered exactly as expected, crossing the line first. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) has won the fourth edition of the Egmont Cycling Race Women, a one-day race around Zottegem, Belgium. Over the 130.2km course — five laps of a 26km circuit, more than 1,100m of climbing with three repeated ascents each lap (Waesberg, Klemhoutstraat, De Vlamme) and the Lippenhovenstraat cobbled sector — the former world champion made the most of a perfect lead-out from teammate Lucinda Brand to launch her sprint in the final kilometre. Hélène Hesters (Liv AlUla Jayco) finished second, ahead of Solbjørk Minke Anderson (EF Education-Oatly) in third. Katja Verkerk (Minimax WB Cycling Team), Mia Gjertsen (Uno-X Mobility Women), Alison Jackson (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93), Eria Giulia Bianchi, Lonneke Uneken — our third pick ahead of the race, confirming her form — and Alicia González, also named in our preview, completed the top ten. It was Balsamo's first win of the summer, following her four stage victories at the Giro d'Italia Women in early June — and comes soon after a Tour de France Femmes where she came close to a stage win on several occasions without quite completing the job.
